‘Beer Yoga’ Now Exists And It’s The Only Kind Of Yoga Life Needs

If you’re the type of person who enjoys yoga, then go and drink your detoxifying green tea smoothie in a corner and think about how crap everyone else looks in comparison to you. How dare you proclaim to like an exercise which makes you feel like Elastigirl from The Incredibles? It’s just making everyone else look bad, y’know.

My idea of a fun is heading to the bar with a few friends and chatting over drinks rather than balancing on your big toe whilst you find your inner zen. As much as I know that yoga is far more beneficial for my body, I can’t deny myself a beer when Friday night comes around.

So if you were to tell me that there’s a way of doing yoga whilst drinking beer, I would be overjoyed. Thankfully, there is a god, and two women have created the aptly-named BeerYoga. It’s exactly what you’d expect and people all around the world are singing its praises. Where do I sign up?

The founder, Jhula, is a yogi and is currently teaching BeerYoga sessions in Melbourne and Sydney. Jhula and fellow yogi Emily launched the exercise company after visiting Burning Man festival, where a camp called HomeBrau Haus offered a more laidback version of the activity.

Speaking to Munchies last year, Jhula stated that: “I think I found a zeitgeist. People in this city just like beer and like yoga.” Although it does sound far more exciting than your typical yoga session, the website is adamant that it is an incredibly serious exercise: “BeerYoga is fun but it’s no joke. We take the philosophies of yoga and pair it with the pleasure of beer-drinking to reach your highest level of consciousness.”

The website also states that: “BeerYoga is the marriage of two great loves – beer and yoga. Both are centuries-old therapies for body, mind and soul. The joy of drinking beer and the mindfulness of yoga compliment each other, and make for an energizing experience.”

This trend has caught on in countries all over the world, especially in Australia and the USA. In Frederick, Maryland, the Flying Dog Brewery hosts Beer+Yoga sessions. Owner Kristen Kelly told the Frederick News-Dispatch: “[…] putting these two activities together really just makes sense. You’re doing your yoga in the morning before the brewery even opens, and then you get to hang out and have a beer.” To clarify, I am not endorsing daytime drinking unless it involves a downward dog of some sort.
